Greaser couple
Vintage greaser couple from the 50s.
The greaser subculture originated in the post-World War II era, rooted in working-class ethnic urban youth. It was associated with a sense of disillusionment with mainstream American culture and economic marginalization despite the post-war boom.
The most distinctive feature of greasers was their greased-back hairstyles, maintained with pomade or petroleum jelly. Their typical clothing included leather jackets, denim jeans (often cuffed), white or black fitted T-shirts, and work boots or motorcycle boots. Females in the subculture also adopted leather jackets and tight, cropped pant.
Greasers were linked to hot rod and motorcycle culture and were often involved in street gangs or motorcycle clubs, though membership was not universal. They were heavily associated with rock ’n’ roll music, which was seen by older generations as rebellious and linked to juvenile delinquency.
